6pm – 6:45pm  Beginner’s Gaelic Class

Taught by Sharron Brooks

Never studied Gaelic before? No problem! If you’re just starting out, or if you feel a bit rusty, this is the class for you! In a fun, relaxed, gently-paced learning-environment, Sharron will teach you the basics of the Scottish Gaelic language in the company of like-minded friends whom you’ll get to see every week as you learn Gaelic together. Gaelic has a reputation for being a difficult language, but this class makes getting acquainted with Gaelic easy and fun. ‘S cinnteach gun gabh sibh spòrs! (You’re sure to have a good time!)

6pm – 6:45pm Gaelic Reading and Grammar Class

Taught by Adam Dahmer

When do you use the verb ‘is’ instead of ‘bi’? When – and when not – should you lenite and slenderize a word? How do you change a verb to put it in the future tense, or the past tense, or the conditional tense? If these are questions you’d like to hear answered, then this the class for you! Every week, we’ll read a Gaelic passage together (to practice our reading and pronunciation), and then pick it apart to better understand its grammar. Ionnsachaidh sibh tòrr rudan air nach robh fios agaibh a-riamh! (You’ll learn a lot of things you never knew before!)

6:45pm – 7:30pm Gaelic Conversation Circle

Led by Sharron Brooks and Adam Dahmer

So you’ve learned a little Gaelic, eh? Well, here’s your chance to use it! Join Sharron, Adam and all your classmates – whether beginners or continuing students – for 45 minutes of Gaelic conversation. The session might have a theme, or we might just talk about whatever comes to mind. In any case, you’ll get a chance to listen to, and talk to, real people using real Gaelic – a very important part of the learning process! Afterwards, you can put on your dancing shoes and catch Ann Vanderwal’s country dance class, which will have just gotten underway upstairs. Bithibh ann no bithibh fann! (Be there or be square!) [Well, literally, ‘be there, or be feeble’, but you get the idea!]
